2010 Hui Makaala Scholarship

Hui Makaala is currently soliciting applications
to the 2010 Hui Makaala Scholarship.
Over the years, it has awarded
hundreds of academic scholarships to Hawai`i’s college-bound high
school graduates, who not only have the drive to succeed but also an
interest in community service and the rich tapestry of Okinawan
culture. In 2008, Hui Makaala awarded $2,000 and $3,000
scholarships to nine recipients for a total of $20,000 awarded.
In 2009, Hui Makaala opened its scholarships to currently enrolled
college students (8 total scholarships awarded, 1 of which was to a

INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING WITH YOUR APPLICATION: 1. ACTIVITIES – On a separate sheet, list extracurricular activities and any organizations of which you are a member. Indicate offices held, awards/honors received, etc.
2. REFERENCES – On a separate sheet, list 2 references and indicate 1 non-relative and 1 relative other than your immediate family. Include your reference’s name, occupation, address and telephone number.
3. ESSAY – On a separate sheet, write an essay about yourself stating why you are applying for this scholarship and include a narrative about your Okinawan experiences and/or interest in Okinawan culture.
4. LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION – Provide 2 letters of recommendation from unrelated parties
5. TRANSCRIPT AND SAT/ACT SCORES – High School transcripts MUST include first semester grades of your senior year. College applicants must provide college transcript in addition to a high school transcript.
DEADLINE: Completed applications (including the above) are DUE JUNE 15, 2010 postmarked). MAIL TO: Hui Makaala Scholarship Committee, P.O. Box 2604, Honolulu, Hawai`i 96803.
Please notify the Scholarship Committee of other scholarship awards you receive. You may accept up to $5,000 of other scholarship awards (not including financial aid/work study) to still be eligible for the Hui Makaala Scholarship.
