Formed in January 1946 with 60 members, Hui Makaala is an Okinawan scholarship organization whose goal is to promote the Okinawan culture and Uchinanchu Spirit through awarding educational scholarships to Hawaii's college-bound students who have an interest in and have contributed to the rich tapestry of Okinawan culture.
The name "Hui Makaala" is derived from the Hawaiian language words "Hui", meaning club, group or association, and "Makaala" meaning ever alert, vigilant, and watchful. Together, "Hui Makaala" implies an organization ever alert to serve, work, and strive together. We are proud of our past Presidents which you can see listed here.
Come to the
Scholarship Fund Luncheon & Fashion Show!
Our scholarships would not exist without the hard work of Hui Makaala's club members and volunteers, as well as your support! In 2014 we awarded eleven students a total of $18,000! These scholarships are funded in part with the proceeds of the Hui Makaala Fashion Show, our biggest fundraiser of the year!
This year, we are proud to feature the designs of Nui Mono, Rix Island Wear and Calista by Cotton Cargo!
We are also honored to feature Okinawan entertainment by Ryukyukoku Matsuri Daiko Hawaii, Afuso Ryu Choichi Kai Hawaii, Tamagusuku Ryu Senjukai Frances Nakachi Ryubu Dojo, and Hawaii Okinawa Creative Arts.
Don't miss out on this fun and fabulous event on Sunday, October 19, 2013 at the Pomaikai Ballrooms at Dole Cannery.
